True Wisdom (Proverbs 3:13-26)

Wisdom is better than wealth, steadier than fear, and safer than self-reliance.

1. Wisdom gives true wealth (vv. 13-18)
The person who finds wisdom has gained something better than silver, gold, or jewels. God's wisdom brings real blessedness because it gives what money cannot: life shaped by God's favour, peace, and lasting good.

2. Wisdom gives harmony and unshakeable assurance (vv. 19-20)
The Lord made the world in wisdom. The ordered beauty of creation reminds us that wisdom is not an optional extra, but part of the way God made reality itself. Because the world is God's world, his wisdom gives solid ground for trust.

3. Wisdom gives us the Father's providential care (vv. 21-26)
God's people are told to keep hold of wisdom and discretion. As they do, wisdom guards their steps, calms their fears, and helps them rest in the Lord's care. True wisdom does not remove every danger, but it teaches us to live securely under our Father's watchful hand.

Questions to think about...

1. What do you think the world means by “wisdom”? How is this different from the Bible’s view?

2. What is the main thrust of most advertisements? How can this cloud our view of true wisdom?

3. How would you define the “profit” and “return” described in verse 14?

4. Think about the illustration of the American survey into wealth. What would give you satisfaction in life?

5. Think of some ways wisdom will give us “Long life” and “Riches and honour” (v. 16).

6. How does contemplating nature give us confidence in God? (vv. 19-20) What effect should this have on our lives?

7. How could we “let go” of God’s wisdom? (v. 21) How can we preserve it?

8. The passage refers to the neck, feet and sleeping body as illustrations of God’s wisdom. How could “hands”, “eyes” or “mouth” be used similarly?

9. In what way do you think “Christ is the wisdom of God”? (1 Corinthians 1:24)

Introduction

Proverbs 3:13-26 calls us to see wisdom as God sees it. In a world that prizes money, status, and visible success, this passage says that true wisdom is richer, deeper, and more secure than anything the world can offer.

1. Wisdom gives true wealth (vv. 13-18)

This passage does not simply tell us to admire wisdom from a distance. It calls us to seek it, keep it, and walk in it. And as the New Testament makes clear, God's wisdom is finally seen in Christ, who is himself the wisdom of God.
